Polestar 2 Tooling Trial Prototypes Roll Off Chinese Plant’s Assembly Line

The Polestar 2 is now one step closer to getting delivered to customers, as the Volvo-owned performance brand has kicked off tooling trial production of the EV.

The first Polestar 2 prototypes have started to roll off the assembly line at the Luqiao factory in China in preparation for series production. Tooling trial production is a second prototype phase designed to prove vehicle integrity and process quality to make sure customer vehicles will match the automaker’s standards. 

“Polestar 2 tooling trial prototypes are now rolling off the final production line in the Luqiao factory, and so nearing series production. Cars will be with customers in the first half of 2020, as planned. We will continue to make good on our promises,” said Polestar CEO Thomas Ingenlath.

Additionally, production of Polestar 1 customer cars is already underway at the Chengdu facility inaugurated in August 2019. The company now plans to open a test track within the premises that will allow it to perform vehicle development and quality assurance, thus reducing the amount of transport required for vehicle assessment.

Orders for both the Polestar 1 PHEV and Polestar 2 EV are being taken on the company’s website. Customers who want the electric vehicle can place a reservation and guarantee delivery in 2020 with a fully refundable deposit of around €1,000 ($1,105), depending on the market.

The Polestar 2 starts from £49,900 ($64,490) in the UK, €58,800 ($64,940) in Germany and $63,000 in the United States, whereas the Polestar 1 is priced from a whopping $155,000 in the U.S. and €155,000 ($171,400) in Germany.
