Coronavirus outbreak only seems to be getting worse with rising mortality rates and detections. The outbreak has affected many aspects of our lives and industries based out of China have been badly hit. Many passengers aboard a cruise ship docked near Japan are reportedly affected by coronavirus. Now Japanese authorities have decided to hand over 2000 iPhones to all the passengers stuck onboard.

With the handouts, the authorities claim that every passenger will have an iPhone. This will allow passengers to access the Japanese Ministry of Health app and chat with a doctor. At this point in time, more than 100 passengers on the ship are quarantined and have tested positive for coronavirus.

In all likelihood, the iPhones are loaner devices that have to be returned. Meanwhile, it is good to see how technology can come in handy when dealing with deadly outbreaks like coronavirus. Some might argue that it is pointless to handover iPhones presumably since every passenger would already be owning a smartphone. Well, the app in question is restricted to the Japanese app store and passengers with devices registered in other countries will not be able to download the app.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, in cooperation with the Ministry of Private Affairs and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, has decided to provide one smartphone (with a total of about 2,000) with the app installed to all the rooms onboard the Diamond Princess (cabins and crew rooms). Has announced that it has been distributed to all rooms.

Passengers can use the app by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and reach out to doctors with questions related to medication or any other health-related query.
