Wonder Woman 1984 was already one of the most anticipated movies of 2020. However, thanks largely to the COVID-19 outbreak, the vast majority of major 2020 films have delayed their release dates to 2021. That means this DC Comics superhero movie sequel could become one of the biggest films of the year in terms of box office results.

So when is Wonder Woman 1984 being released, and is it coming to theaters or streaming services? Well, depending on where you live, it may actually be coming to both theaters and via HBO Max in December. Don’t have HBO Max yet? You can sign up for just $15 a month, and have access to WW 1984, alongside tons of other Time Warner theatrical releases throughout 2021.

The sequel to the 2017 hit Wonder Woman will see Gal Gadot returning as the nearly immortal Amazon, Diana. In the year 1984, she faces a new threat. Maxwell Lord, played by Pedro Pascal, is offering everyone on Earth their biggest desire. For Diana, that’s the return of her lost love Steve Trevor, played again by Chris Pine. For a meek woman, played by Kristen Wiig, it’s the desire to be powerful, so she turns into the cat-like Cheetah. But what are Max Lord’s real intentions?
Wonder Woman 1984 is being released in the US and Canada on Christmas Day, December 25, 2020.
In the US, the film will be released in any movie theater that is still open. However, since a ton of theater locations are closed due to the coronavirus threat, its studio, Warner Bros, decided to also release the movie via its new streaming video subscription service, HBO Max, at no additional cost. That means anyone in the US can watch Wonder Woman 1984 on their smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop PC, or smart TV on the service, for its price of $14.99 a month. The movie will be available on the service for one month, and then it will be removed for at least several months.
In Canada, the movie will be released in open theaters as well. However, since HBO Max is only available in the US at the moment, Warner Bros has decided to release the movie as a 48-hour rental on various digital movie stores for the price of $29.99.

Because HBO Max is not available yet outside the US, the movie will only be released outside of North America in movie theaters. The (sort of) good news is that those countries will actually get the movie a bit earlier, on Wednesday, December 16.
As a matter of fact, no. Warner Bros recently decided to replicate its Wonder Woman 1984 release and business model for its entire 2021 theatrical release schedule. That means that upcoming 2021 films like The Suicide Squad, The Matrix 4, Mortal Kombat, and Dune will be released in open theaters in the US, but also will be available to stream at home via HBO Max on the same day, and will remain on the service for a month. Again, this will be offered at no additional cost to HBO Max subscribers.
