Facelifted 2022 Audi A8 Arrives In America, Ditches Mainstream V8 And Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

Audi introduced the facelifted A8 last fall and now the company has revealed the model will start at $86,500 when it goes on sale in the United States.

Costing the same as its predecessor, the 2022 A8 features a lightly revised exterior with a wider singleframe grille that is flanked by new LED headlights. The model also boasts an updated rear end and high-tech OLED taillights, which alert fellow drivers when they get to close and feature a wider signature when dynamic mode is selected.

Given the A8’s position as a flagship sedan, it comes nicely equipped with Valetta leather seats that feature heating and ventilation up front. Buyers will also find a leather-wrapped steering wheel, natural dark brown walnut wood trim, and a panoramic sunroof.

Other highlights include a wireless smartphone charger, a four-zone automatic climate control system, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system. They’re joined by a digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch infotainment system, and a secondary 8.6-inch display.

Under the hood, the engine lineup has been gutted as the plug-in hybrid A8 L 60 e and V8-powered A8 L 60 have been dropped. The A8 L 55 remains and continues to feature a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that develops 335 hp (250 kW / 340 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm) of torque.

It’s connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission and a standard quattro all-wheel drive system. This setup enables the model to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 5.6 seconds, before hitting an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph (209 km/h).

Buyers seeking more performance will have to opt for the S8, which is the only other variant for 2022. It starts at $116,900 and features a familiar twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with 563 hp (420 kW / 571 PS) and 590 lb-ft (799 Nm) of torque. Thanks to the extra oomph, the dash to 60 mph (96 km/h) is cut to 3.8 seconds while the top speed increases to an electronically limited 155 mph (250 km/h).

Besides the V8 engine, the S8 features a sport-tuned air suspension, dynamic all-wheel steering, and 20-inch wheels wrapped in summer tires. They’re joined by a four-tailpipe exhaust system, stainless steel pedals, carbon fiber trim, and Valcona leather seats with diamond stitching.

Note: Prices exclude a $1,095 destination charge
