Production Cars Don’t Get Much More Outlandish Than The GMC Hummer EV

No one needs a vehicle like the 2022 GMC Hummer EV. It is massive, insanely heavy, and looks absolutely ridiculous. But is it any good?

The car manufacturer is currently building the Hummer EV in Edition 1 guise, a variant that costs a touch over $110,000. Given its starting price, it’s obvious that the Hummer EV Edition 1 is far from a mass-market EV, even though it is currently the only EV that GM is building.

The headline figures of the vehicle are quite remarkable. Powering it are no less than three electric motors that combine to produce 1,000 hp and are fed by a massive 212.7 kWh battery pack. This battery pack is by far the largest of any current production car, significantly larger than the 128.9 kWh battery of the Rivian R1T and the 131.0 kWh extended range battery that will be available with the Ford F-150 Lightning.

As you would imagine, this battery is extremely heavy. It is so heavy in fact that Throttle House notes it weighs a remarkable 2,923 lbs (1,326 kg), which is only slightly less than the 2,950 lbs (1,338 kg) curb weight of a brand new Honda Civic Si. All up, the truck tips the scales at 9,062 lbs (4,111 kg).

Despite its weight, the reviewers note that the Hummer EV is heaps of fun to drive. The ride of quality is good as long as the suspension is lowered a little bit and the crab walk feature is quite nice. The reviewers are also impressed with some of the neat pieces of technology found within the Hummer EV.
