Top Gear Has Some New EV Awards And Some Surprising Winners

Top Gear decided that thanks to the new swath of electrified vehicles on the planet that it needed a whole new set of awards. Now, they’ve released the entire list and quite a number of the winners might surprise you. Here are some of the list and some of the reasoning behind it.

Top Performance EV goes to none other than the Rimac Nevera. I mean, of course, it does. It’s undoubtedly the fastest accelerating production car on the planet and it probably should be for some $2 million.

Chris Harris picked out his personal favorite and of everything available he chose the Polestar 1. It’s not a super sports car or an ultra-luxury vehicle for the stars. No, it’s a proper hybrid and it’s so good that Harris bought one himself.

Perhaps more shocking is that the BMW iX wins Top Gear’s award for top luxury EV on the market, beating out the Mercedes EQS and the Lucid Air. In fact, it’s the lack of gigantic screens and flashy tech that helped it to stand out.

On the other end of the spectrum, the Skoda Eniaq EV is TG’s top pick for Value EV. Slightly less practical is the Defender EV which gets special mention as Paddy McGuinness’ choice of EV of the year. Co-host Freddie Flintoff goes another direction though as he picks the ultra-capable Rivian R1T.

Don’t worry though because Top Gear also decides to bend the rule a little and award one car for the Best Noise. That car is the Ferrari 296 GTB which can indeed be driven on electric power alone. It’s not the only odd pick though.

The Lotus Eletre gets a nod despite the fact that it’s not out yet and the Volkswagen ID. Buzz gets the EV of the Year award even though it’s slow, underpowered, has pitiful range, and hasn’t even got a starting price. I guess looks really can take you a long way in this world.

What do you think of these choices? Perhaps Tesla should’ve had a nod for being nearly as fast as the Rimac while being much cheaper. Or you might think that the new Hummer EV deserves more attention. Tell us in the comments below.
