Which Fitbit devices are waterproof?

Water resistance is a core feature of modern smartwatches and fitness trackers. They provide the necessary protection for swimmers and divers, and peace of mind for clumsy folk. But which Fitbit devices are waterproof, and which can you use in the shower or the pool?

Before we delve deeper into this topic, it’s important to note that “waterproof” and “water resistance” are not the same thing. Fitbit does not claim that any of its devices are waterproof, but several devices are classed as water-resistant.

A waterproof device is impermeable to water under any circumstances. This means it’s effectively impossible for water to get into the device. Water resistance, however, suggests that there is still a chance that water damage can occur in certain conditions. According to Fitbit, its water-resistant devices can be used in water as deep as 50 meters (164 feet). Any deeper, and you run the risk of damage due to pressure at that depth. It’s important to keep this in mind if you’re a diver shopping for a new smartwatch.

There isn’t one Fitbit device specifically designed for swimmers or divers, but we’d call out the Fitbit Sense and Charge 5 best for that particular purpose.

The Sense is the company’s most advanced wearable to date, with a large display that improves legibility underwater. When selecting swimming as an activity, the Sense automatically engages a screen lock to guard against accidental touches.

The Fitbit Charge 5 also boasts the largest color screen of any of the company’s trackers. It also features a Water Lock mode that you can manually enable in its settings menu.
