Formula 1 is headed to Miami for the first-ever Grand Prix at the Miami International Autodrome this weekend, and the sport’s stars, like Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda, are discovering what the locals do for fun.
The two drivers were recently entered into Swamp Buggy Racing, a form of motorsport that pits 900 hp (671 kW/912 PS), giant-wheeled, amphibious vehicles against one another in a swamp. The Buggies are enormous but possess no brakes and have just two gears.
Fortunately, Verstappen and Tsunoda didn’t have to learn against seasoned experts and were instead entered to race against Jett Lawrence, a Supercross champion, and Zion Wright, a skateboarder who competed at the Tokyo Olympics.

The Formula 1 drivers, though, proved that they can be pretty quick in anything with four wheels and an engine. Tsunoda had an easy first round against Lawrence, who missed a shift and was almost immediately taken out of the competition.
Verstappen, meanwhile, had a more difficult heat, being beaten off the line by Wright. Competing in the same buggy as Lawrence, he may have been at an immediate disadvantage, but managed to keep the vehicle moving and passed his competitor on the final turn, absolutely soaking him in the process.
All of which led to a final heat with Tsunoda competing against Verstappen for all the marbles, something that hasn’t happened so far in their day jobs. Fans of F1 may not be surprised to hear the other competitors saying that “Dude Yuki was going so fast” and the host replying that “Dude, Yuki’s nuts.”
