Lamborghini Squadra Corse announced it is developing an LMDh hybrid hypercar prototype that will participate in the FIA World Endurance Championship (Hypercar class) and the IMSA WeatherTeck Sports Car Championship (GTP class) starting from 2024. The racecar that appeared in a teaser sketch will allow Lamborghini to fight for the overall victories in endurance races in Le Mans, Daytona and Sebring.
The shadowy teaser suggests that the low-slung hypercar will inherit design traits from the likes of the Sián FKP 37 and the track-only Essenza SCV12, with sharp edges and a wedge shape that is typical of Lamborghini. While it doesn’t look as extreme as the V12 Vision Gran Turismo concept from 2019, we are sure it will look quite aggressive in the flesh, with its teardrop-shaped greenhouse and massive aero components.

The racecar is being developed to comply with the rules of the new LDMh class. Thus, it will be fitted with a hybrid powertrain, in line with Lamborghini’s electrification strategy. Mind you, the Sant’Agata supercar manufacturer will offer a fully electrified range by the end of 2024, including the plug-in-hybrid successors of the Aventador and the Huracan.
Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborgthini Chairman and CEO, said: “This step up into the highest echelon of sports car racing marks an important milestone for our company. We will be measuring ourselves against the very best, on the most demanding proving grounds. On one hand, this will give our successful motorsports program even more visibility, but it will also allow us to test future technologies: our LMDh prototypes will become our most sophisticated open laboratory on four wheels.”
Lamborghini Squadra Corse has won more than 40 titles since 2015, and now hopes to compete at the highest level with the new racecar, going for an overall victory at the prestigious 24 Hours of Le Mans. The LMDh project will run in addition to the development of Huracan-based race cars for the Super Trofeo and GT3 programs. The new hypercar will make its racing debut at the 2024 FIA WEC season and at the 2024 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. Other manufacturers that are working on their own entries include Porsche, Alpine, Peugeot, BMW, and Cadillac.
