The Bugatti Bolide is perhaps the most outlandish vehicle ever conceived by the French car manufacturer and the original show car was recently brought along to the Concours d’Elegance at Villa d’Este in Italy.
When first unveiled in October 2020, Bugatti said the Bolide was a one-off experimental study conceived as the ultimate expression of a lightweight hypercar with its quad-turbo 8.0-liter W16. Given the burgeoning demand for high-end hypercars, it came as little surprise when in August 2021, Bugatti confirmed that the Bolide would hit the production line and be capped at just 40 units worldwide.
Interestingly, the original Bolide show car isn’t simply a stationary display vehicle as some may expect. In fact, it is fully functional and is powered by the car manufacturer’s 8.0-liter W16. In this form, the engine churns out an extraordinary 1,824 hp and 1,364 lb-ft (1,850 Nm) of torque, figures that are made all the more remarkable when you consider that the whole car weighs just 1,240 kg (2,733 lbs).

When first conceived as a concept, Bugatti said the Bolide could hit 100 km/h (62 mph) in 2.17 seconds, 200 km/h (124 mph) in 4.36 seconds, 300 km/h (186 mph) in 7.37 seconds, 248 mph (400 km/h) in 12.08 seconds, and 310 mph (500 km/h) in 20.16 seconds. Bugatti has also claimed it is theoretically possible of lapping the Nurburgring Nordschleife in just 5:23.1 minutes.
Bugatti will turn things down a notch for the production model, capping power to 1,578 hp and 1,180 lb-ft (1,600 Nm) of torque. The production Bolide will also be quite a bit heavier, tipping the scales at 1,450 kg (3,196 lbs), inevitably impacting its performance.
The first Bolides are expected to reach the hands of customers in 2024.
