Smart #1’s British Order Books Opening In December For Launch Edition

Smart will open British order books for the #1 SUV in December and initially offer the electric vehicle in a special Launch Edition limited to just 100 examples. Deliveries will start in mid-2023.

The car manufacturer unveiled the #1 in early April as a rival to vehicles like the Hyundai Niro EV and VW ID.3. It represents a dramatic departure from all other Smart vehicles to come before it and is the first all-new, all-electric Smart product launched since Geely purchased a 50 per cent stake in the brand.

The special Launch Edition model coming to the UK will be exclusively painted white with a gold roof that incorporates an intricate chequered pattern. The Smart #1 Launch Edition will also be equipped with 19-inch Prism alloy wheels while found in the cabin will be a number of distinctive trim colors and two-leather leather highlights.

Key standard features of the vehicle will be matrix LED headlights, a 13-speaker Beats audio system, adaptive cruise control, a fully automated parking system, and wireless smartphone charging.

“The smart #1 represents the start of a new era for our brand,” Smart chief executive David Browne said. “Its comprehensive offering of outstanding design, exceptional space utilization and connected solutions is confidence-inspiring to customers and is a strong signal of intent for our product portfolio moving forward. Our Launch Edition offers customers an exclusive opportunity to be the first to experience our vision for a new generation of fully electric urban mobility when it hits the road mid-next year.”

Smart has not yet announced British pricing for the SUV.

Powering the Smart #1 is a single rear-mounted electric motor pumping out 264 hp and 252 lb-ft (343 Nm) of torque. While other configurations haven’t been announced, the #1’s platform has been designed to accommodate up to three electric motors. Providing the motor with its juice is a 66 kWh battery pack that’s good for 273 miles (440 km) of range.
