Facelifted Mercedes GLA Spied With Minor Updates

Spy photographers have already snapped the facelifted Mercedes A- and B-Class, and now we’re getting our first look at the updated GLA.

Recently caught undergoing testing, the facelifted crossover has a lightly revised front end with a wide grille that is flanked by updated headlights.  The changes don’t immediately standout, but a closer inspection reveals taller lighting elements.

We can also expect a new front bumper, but the camouflage does a good job of hiding the changes. Out back, there isn’t much to see as the only update appears to be revised taillights that feature new graphics.

While spy photographers were only able to get a glimpse of the interior, we can expect a handful of updates including a streamlined center console that ditches the bulky touchpad controller. The model may also come with a new steering wheel as well as the usual trim and upholstery updates.

Engine options should largely carryover and this means Americans can expect a familiar turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder developing 221 hp (165 kW / 224 PS) and 258 lb-ft (349 Nm) of torque. It’s connected to an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, which can be paired to an optional all-wheel drive system. When equipped with the latter, the GLA 250 can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 6.6 seconds.

Europeans can expect a more diverse engine lineup with an assortment of petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid options. Among them should be an entry-level 1.3-liter four-cylinder petrol with 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) and 147 lb-ft (200 Nm) of torque.

However, the plug-in hybrid is far more interesting as it combines the 1.3-liter engine with a 15.6 kWh battery pack and an electric motor. This setup gives the model a combined output of 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS) and an electric-only WLTP range of up to 38 miles (61 km).
