Mercedes-Benz Vision EQXX Smashes Own Record, Travels 747 Miles On A Single Charge From Germany To The UK

Mercedes-Benz’s Vision EQXX concept was designed to be a preview of the German automaker’s ultra-efficient EV future, and to prove that, back in April they completed a 626-mile (1,008 km) road trip on a single charge of the car’s battery, which actually still had about 15 percent capacity remaining by the end.

In an attempt to further that saga, Mercedes took the Vision EQXX on another road trip, and this time they were able to shatter the precious record by achieving a range of 747 miles (1,202 km) on a single charge. This was accomplished thanks to the Vision EQXX’s stellar aerodynamics and highly efficient powertrain, and it becomes even more impressive when considering the car is equipped with a sub-100 kWh battery, a capacity smaller than their own EQS’s 107.8 kWh unit.

The journey began at Mercedes HQ in Stuttgart, Germany, and the first stint took the Vision EQXX to Untertürkheim, another German town. After that, it went to Reims and Calais, two cities in France, before setting out on the final leg of the trip to the UK. That part involved making a quick stop at the Mercedes-AMG F1 base in Brackley before heading off to Silverstone.

Once they arrived in Silverstone, they headed over to the iconic racing circuit. Waiting there was Mercedes Formula E champion Nyck de Vries, who push the car around the track for 11 laps until the battery ran out coming back into the pits. A bit ironic considering they wouldn’t let their 2016 F1 champion Nico Rosberg even take the car out on the streets, claiming he “wasn’t qualified”. Nevertheless, this was an incredibly impressive feat on Mercedes’ part, and it truly shows where the EV industry is headed in the not-too-distant future.

After the 747-mile (1,202 km) road trip, which took 14 hours and 30 minutes over the course of two days, the Vision EQXX headed over to Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrain headquarters in Brixworth, UK for an overnight battery refill before its next public outing: the famous Goodwood Hillclimb.
