GMC is readying a software update for the Hummer EV that will make it even more capable along difficult off-road trails.
A no-charge software update has been developed for the electric pickup truck that will lift the Adaptive Air Suspension higher than previously possible, boosting ground clearance to 15.9 inches (404 mm). It will form part of what GMC dubs ‘Extract Mode’ and gives the Hummer EV more ground clearance than the Ford F-150 Raptor, Bronco Raptor, Ram 1500 TRX, and Rivian R1T.
In its normal settings, the GMC Hummer EV offers 10.1 inches (257 mm) of ground clearance and provides an approach angle of 41.5 degrees, a 31.6 degree departure angle, and a 22.3 degree breakover angle. In the Raised Mode, the ride height increases to 11.9 inches (302 mm) while bumping up the approach, departure, and breakover angles to 44.3 degrees, 33.7 degrees, and 25.4 degrees respectively.

With the new Extract Mode, not only has the ground clearance been increased to 15.9 inches (404 mm), but the approach angle now sits at 49.7 degrees, the departure angle is 38.4 degrees, and the breakover angle is 32.2 degrees. The water fording depth has also increased from 26 inches (660 mm) and 28 inches (711 mm) in the Normal and Raised modes to 32 inches (813 mm) in Extract mode.
“Our goal was to push the boundaries of what an electric vehicle is capable of and to develop real, usable features that will allow customers to take off-roading to the next-level,” GMC Hummer EV lead development engineering Aaron Pfau explained. “The development of the GMC HUMMER EV was a blank slate that was filled out by dedicated team of engineers who are hardcore off-road enthusiasts. Adding an innovative feature like Extract Mode results in an off-road vehicle that has incredible ground-clearance and capability that will take you to new places.”
The update will be available to all existing customers of the flagship Hummer EV Edition 1.
