The current Land Rover Defender may be the perfect mix of ruggedness and luxury but if you’re looking for a vehicle to take on an epic off-road adventure, this old Defender might be more appropriate.
What you’re looking at is a 1996 model that was acquired from South Africa in March 2021 before undergoing a mechanical and cosmetic refurbishment prior to being imported into the U.S. this March. It has been listed up for sale on Bring a Trailer and is being auctioned with service records, importation documents, and a clean Georgia title in the seller’s name.
The first thing that may catch your attention with this Defender is the fact that it is a two-door 90 model and is finished in Firenze Red Pearl complete with black fender flares. You don’t see red Defenders very often but we think it looks excellent. It also rocks a set of 16-inch sawtooth wheels wrapped in 267/75 Cooper Discoverer STT tires and as part of the refurbishment, had a black soft top installed alongside LED lighting, a KBX grille, weatherstripping, windshield seal, stainless steel hinge bolts, and a swing-away tire carrier.
The cabin of the Defender is just as appealing as the exterior. It comes complete with diamond-quilted leather on the front bucket seats, rear jump seats, center console, and door panels. The refurbishment saw the heater core replaced alongside the fan box, various knobs and switches, pedal covers, and trim pieces. It also features a new air conditioning system, JVC CD/Bluetooth stereo, two 12-volt outlets, a USB port, and a center console.
Power comes courtesy of a 2.5-liter turbodiesel inline-four that recently had the timing belt, rear main seal, front crankshaft seal, oil pan seal, water pump, thermostat, and battery replaced. Mated to this engine is a five-speed manual transmission driving all four wheels.
