Volkswagen unveiled the facelifted Teramont X in China, which is a slightly redesigned version of the Atlas Cross Sport produced by SAIC for the Chinese market. The debut follows an earlier leak from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information.
The Teramont X, originally introduced in 2019, is one of the numerous SUVs offered by the German company in China, and a sportier-looking version of the regular Teramont (Atlas). When the latter was facelifted in 2021 we expected the same visual changes to be carried over to the Teramont X which at the time received mild trim updates.

While the profile of the SUV remains virtually unchanged and identical to the North American Atlas Cross Sport, the visual updates at the front are quite substantial, helping the Chinese model stand out more. The pictured model is a high-spec R-Line trim with high-gloss black accents all around the bodywork, a set of 21-inch black-finished five-spoke wheels and red brake calipers.
It seems that VW designers used the “duplicate” tool on the headlights, with split units on each side featuring matrix LED graphics inspired by modules in computer chips. The grille has also been revised with a single light strip in the middle. Last but not least, the updated bumper has larger interconnected intakes surrounded by gloss black trim in typical R flavor.
At the back, the facelifted Teramont X is distinguished by a new glossy black panel that is integrating the full-width taillights with modern LED graphics, the illuminated VW emblem, and Teramont X lettering in the middle. The sporty rear bumper gains glossy black trim with faux exhaust pipes under the wide reflector lights. VW also announced the addition of a new exterior shade called Wilderness Green.
The styling changes didn’t alter the footprint of the SUV which measures 4,917 mm (193.6 inches) long, 1,989 mm (78.3 inches) wide, and 1,729 mm (68.1 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,980 mm (117.3 inches). SAIC VW didn’t reveal photos of the interior but we expect it to be carried over, with a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 12-inch infotainment touchscreen, and a familiar three-spoke steering wheel taken from the ID range of models.
The press release didn’t mention any changes in the powertrains, which will likely be carried over. The pictured 530 V6 flagship is fitted with the 2.5-liter VR6 petrol engine producing 295 hp (220 kW / 299 PS). Power is transmitted to all four wheels through a seven-speed DSG automatic gearbox, hence the 4Motion emblem at the back. The Teramont X will also be available with the smaller 2.0 TSI four-cylinder engine, producing either 217 hp (162 kW / 220 PS) in the 380 TSI trim, or 183 hp (137 kW / 186 PS) in the entry-level 330 TSI trim.
The facelifted VW Teramont X will be produced by SAIC in China. The local market launch is expected in the coming months.
