The unveiling of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R was anticlimactic as the company barely said anything about the model and didn’t release performance specifications.
While that’s kind of annoying, especially after a teaser campaign that overstayed its welcome, Honda has launched a relatively basic configurator for the Civic Type R in Japan.
It enables users to check out the car’s color palette that includes Rallye Red, Boost Blue, Crystal Black Pearl, Sonic Grey Pearl, and Championship White. The latter color is exclusive to the Civic Type R, but the model looks rather fetching in Crystal Black Pearl and Boost Blue.

Users can also check out the car’s two-tone interior, which features red front seats with Type R badging on the headrests. They’re contrasted by a black dashboard and matching door panels. Elsewhere, we can see red contrast stitching and dark trim with red accents.
While the company has been coy on specifics, the “all-new Honda Civic Type R is the most powerful model in Type R’s 30-year history, and has been engineered from the ground up to deliver thrilling performance with an addictive driving experience – both on road and on the racetrack.” Power will be provided by an “even more powerful and responsive version” of their turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and it will be connected to an “improved” six-speed manual that features a rev-matching system. Thanks to these improvements, the hatch promises to be the “fastest, most powerful Honda-branded vehicle ever offered in the U.S.”
Honda will release additional details this fall, but the company’s Japanese website lists some equipment. In particular, it says the model will have an active exhaust, an aluminum hood, and 19-inch aluminum wheels that are wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires. They’ll be joined by Brembo front brakes and a limited slip differential.
Moving into the cabin, Japanese buyers will find an Alcantara-wrapped steering wheel, a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 9-inch infotainment system. The Type R also sports an aluminum shift knob, a dual-zone automatic climate control system, and a LogR data logger. They’re joined by a drive mode selector with Sport, Comfort, and R settings as well as a new Individual mode.
