The 2024 Mercedes-AMG E53 E-Performance Is Shaping Up To Be One Powerful Plug-In Hybrid

Spy photographers recently snapped the Mercedes-AMG SL 53 E-Performance and now they’ve gotten a glimpse of the E53 E-Performance.

Expected to arrive shortly after the redesigned 2024 E-Class, the performance-focused plug-in hybrid is heavily disguised and features a Panamericana grille that is flanked by sweptback headlights with stylish daytime running lights.

The camouflage hides a number of details, but it appears the model will have prominent intakes, streamlined bodywork, and flush-mounted door handles. They’re joined by sporty side skirts and mismatched wheels, which are supported by beefy brakes with red calipers up front.

Further back, there’s a four-tailpipe exhaust system and a charging port on the rear fender. We can also get a glimpse of the taillights as well as a discreet rear spoiler.

The interior is expected to follow in the footsteps of the C- and S-Class, and this means we can expect a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster as well as an infotainment system with a portrait orientation. There’s no word on how big the latter display will be, but it should fall somewhere in between the 11.9- and 12.8-inch screens used in the E-Class’ siblings.

Of course, AMG variants are all about performance and the E53 E-Performance literally has it in its name. Mercedes is keeping details under wraps, but speculation suggests the car will share its powertrain with the upcoming C63 E-Performance.

If that’s the case, the model could be outfitted with a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine as well as an electric motor. This setup is slated to give the C63 E-Performance a combined output of 671 hp (500 kW / 680 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque, but it remains unclear if those figures will carryover to the E53.
