Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Matt Black Edition Debuts In Japan

Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Matt Black Edition Debuts In Japan

Last month, Toyota unveiled the Land Cruiser Matt Black Edition for Europe, and now the automaker applies the exact same treatment to the JDM-spec Land Cruiser Prado, calling it the Package Matt Black Edition. The special edition is a follow-up to the 70th anniversary from last year.

The SUV becomes slightly more stylish in the Matt Black Edition, which could be the last hurrah for the 13-year-old current generation model before the all-new Prado arrives next year. Predictably, changes are limited to the exterior and interior trim.

The Package Matt Black Edition is distinguished from the rest of the Japanese range thanks to the matte black finish on the grille, headlight garnish, roof rails, mirror caps, tailgate accents, and the 18-inch alloy wheels shod in 265/60R18 tires. The LED headlights have an auto-leveling function and the mirrors fold electrically.

Inside we find black leather upholstery, wooden accents on the dashboard, a 9-inch infotainment touchscreen with navigation and TV, and a six-speaker audio system. The SUV is available in five-seater (two-row) and seven-seater (three-row) variants. The Toyota Safety Sense suite includes adaptive cruise control but blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert are optional extras.

Unlike the EU-spec Land Cruiser 150 Series which is only available with a diesel, in Japan buyers have the choice between diesel and petrol engines. Thus, the Matt Black Edition is available with either the 2.8-liter turbodiesel producing 201 hp (150 kW / 204 PS) and 500 Nm (368.8 lb-ft) of torque, or with the 2.7-liter petrol producing 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 246 Nm (181 lb-ft) of torque. In both cases, power is transmitted to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic gearbox.

The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado Package Matt Black Edition is already available to order in Japan with pricing between ¥4,300,000 ($32,859) and ¥5,118,000 ($39,110) depending on the specification. The current fourth-generation Land Cruiser Prado 150 Series was originally introduced in 2009 and received major facelifts in 2013 and 2017 alongside numerous model year updates.
