Mercedes-AMG One Production Kicks Off In The UK Ahead Of Deliveries This Year

Mercedes-AMG has officially started production of the One hypercar with the first customer deliveries to start before the end of the year.

Each of the 275 Mercedes-AMG One models bound for the production line will be built by hand across 16 assembly and testing stations. Each car will come to life at a special facility in Coventry, UK.

Work starts with the carbon fiber monocoque and the fabrication of the entire carbon fiber outer skin of the hybrid hypercar. Mercedes’ production specialists then ensure that each and every panel fits and that the carbon fiber weave is perfect. Once everything is up to the brand’s meticulous standards, the exterior panels are dismantled and hand-painted to the specification of each customer.

The car manufacturer then assembles the body-in-white and the advanced Formula 1-derived powertrain. All powertrains, complete with the 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 and four electric motors, are individually hot tested on test benches at the Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains facility in Brixworth, the same site where the company’s F1 powertrains are made.

Once each Mercedes-AMG One is built, the automaker will test out all driving modes on a rolling dyno, before also subjecting each car to a noise, vibration, and harshness test. A monsoon rain test is also performed before the car is rolled into a light booth for a final visual inspection and important technical function tests.

Each car is then taken to a nearby proving ground where a factory test driver will sign off on each unit. The hypercar will then be transported to the Mercedes-AMG headquarters in Affalterbach, Germany where the handover to the customer takes place.

“The Mercedes AMG ONE is the most ambitious project we have ever undertaken – from development to production,” chairman of the board of management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH, Philipp Schiemer, described in a statement. “It marks another high point in Mercedes AMG’s successful strategic development towards an electrified Future of Driving Performance. The production of the exclusive small series is a truly unique challenge.”
