Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS Looks To Become Most Thrilling Droptop This Side Of A Supercar

The long-awaited Porsche 718 Boxster Spyder RS is inching closer to reality and was recently filmed lapping the Nurburgring Nordschleife at impressive speeds.

As you may have guessed from its name, the Boxster Spyder RS will serve as the convertible alternative to the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and sit at the top of the Boxster range.

The most significant upgrades enjoyed by the first RS will be found under the skin. Like the Cayman GT4 RS, it will be equipped with a naturally-aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six pumping out 493 hp and 331 lb-ft (448 Nm) of part. Working alongside this engine will be a seven-speed PDK transmission driving the rear wheels. The upcoming Spyder should be able to hit 60 mph (96 km/h) in around 3.2 seconds while continuing through to a 196 mph (315 km/h) top speed.

While the Boxster Spyder RS may match the Cayman GT4 RS in a straight line, it likely won’t be quite as quick around a racetrack as it lacks the towering rear wing of its hardtop sibling. Nevertheless, the engineer behind the wheel of this prototype was more than happy to push the car to its limits, taking some of Green Hell’s most famous corners with impressive pace.

Various visual and aerodynamic upgrades will be made to the car. For example, the front end will be revised with a more pronounced front splitter and aerodynamic fins on either side of the bumper. A new hood has also been developed, complete with two prominent NACA ducts. Porsche has also equipped the car with new air intakes just behind the side windows, mimicking the air intakes found on the Cayman GT4 RS that are a key contributor to why it sounds so remarkable from behind the wheel.

Porsche has not yet announced when the 718 Boxster Spyder RS will be revealed to the world but we suspect it will arrive next year as a 2024 model.
