2024 Renault 5 Mule Spied, Previews An Affordable Electric City Car

Renault is planning to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 5 with a “sporty and offbeat” concept at the Paris Motor Show, but the company has already begun testing mules for the reborn hatch that is expected in 2024.

Snapped wearing a Clio body, this mule immediately stands out thanks to its pronounced fender flares which hint at a wide track. That isn’t the only noticeable change as we can see a charging port has been grafted onto the grille. Underneath, we can get a glimpse of the structure protecting the battery pack.

Needless to say, the production model will look nothing like this as the car is expected to echo the Renault 5 concept that was introduced in 2021. As a result, we can expect a retro-inspired design with sharp lines, a minimalist greenhouse, and a relatively flat roof.

Renault has already revealed a handful of details about the upcoming production model and it’s slated to use a 134 hp (100 kW / 136 PS) electric motor as well as an assortment of components that are shared with other EVs. This will help to reduce costs and the company has previously said the model will be around 33% cheaper than the Zoe, which the 5 will presumably replace.

Alpine will also be getting a version of the 5 and it’s slated to use a more powerful electric motor producing 215 hp (160 kW / 218 PS). It will power the front wheels and enable the model to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in approximately six seconds.
