Dodge Summons The Black Ghost With 807-HP 2023 Challenger Last Call Special Edition

Dodge’s penultimate ‘Last Call’ special edition vehicle has been announced, and it’s as impressive as it is reverent. The Dodge Challenger Black Ghost will be limited to just 300 examples.

Based on the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye Widebody, it bumps the power up to 807 hp (602 kW/818 PS). More than just a muscle car, though, the model is a nod to the brand’s performance history.

Inspired by a 1970 Dodge Challenger RT SE owned by Godfrey Quails, the classic car was a legend on Woodward Avenue in the ’70s. Powered by a 426 Hemi V8, it was famed for its ability to beat all comers.

Quickly earning a reputation in Detroit, the cart always disappeared into the night right after beating its latest victim. Quails, a Detroit police officer, had to keep his street racing a strict secret, which helped the car earn its name as the “Black Ghost.”

Such was the legend of the car that it earned a spot on the National Historic Vehicle Register in 2020. Heart-warmingly, the original car remains in the ownership of the Quails family to this day.

“There are so many legendary muscle cars in Dodge brand history, it was hard to choose the seven vehicles we wanted to pay homage to with our Last Call lineup, but the Black Ghost was an easy pick,” said Tim Kuniskis, Dodge brand chief executive officer – Stellantis. “The 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost is the prelude to what we’re going to unveil with our seventh and final special-edition model.”

To honor the legend, the 2023 Dodge Challenger Black Ghost gets a “gator skin” roof decal to match the gator skin vinyl roof of the original. It also gets a white rear fender graphic, Challenger grille script, and spoiler badges, among other historical touches.

The sixth of seven Last Call special edition Dodges, this car joins the Dodge Challenger Shakedown, the Charger Super Bee, the Challenger and Charger Scat Pack Swinger, and the Dodge Charger King Daytona as the farewell vehicles for the beloved cars.

We will now have to wait over a month before finding out what the final Last Call special edition is, though, because it will be unveiled at the 2022 SEMA show, which runs from November 1-4 in Las Vegas.
