Toyota Showcases GR Corolla’s Manual ‘Box And Drift Skills In New “Rally Ready” Ad Campaign

Demand for Toyota’s GR Corolla hot hatch is already sky-high before a single customer has slipped behind the wheel, and it’s about to get another shot in arm with the release of Toyota’s new “Rally Ready” ad campaign.

The all-wheel drive Corolla features in a series of short films, some in which it’s the star, and others where it shares the stage with different Toyota performance heroes, including its Gazoo Racing bothers.

In Saatchi & Saatchi’s “Running Wild,” we see the Corolla appear fully sideways, drifting through photographer Larry Chen’s carefully set-up static shot, then slide through a warehouse car-meet containing more Toyota icons, out onto a rally stage and finally past professional drifter, Ryan Tuerck, and his competition-prepped GR.

Tuerck makes another appearance in Saatchi & Saatchi’s other GR spot, this one called “Meet the Family.” The family movie also features the GR86 and GR Supra, and some pretty cool transitions from live action to Manga-style animation. Other films that form Toyota’s marketing effort make a big play of the of some of the Corolla’s features that set it apart from rivals like the VW Golf R, including its three-cylinder engine and manual transmission.

In fact, you can only get the GR Corolla with a manual transmission and 1.6-liter three-cylinder engine that sends its 300 hp (304 PS) to all four wheels. Toyota quotes a zero to 60 mph (97 km/h) time of 4.9 seconds, but Motor Trend couldn’t beat 5.4 seconds in its test. The Corolla makes its debut in dealers any day now and costs from $35,900.
