Hyundai Aims To Make 50% Of The Official Vehicles At The 2022 FIFA World Cup Electrified

More than half of the 446 passenger vehicles that Hyundai is providing for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar will be fully electric or hybrid. That, the automaker says, is part of its goal to making the event greener.

The worldwide soccer competition will be served by 10 Elec City electric buses, as well as numerous Sonata, Tucson, and Kona hybrids. The all-electric Hyundai Ioniq 5 will also be on offer, and FIFA VIPs and staff will be transported in the lap of luxury by Genesis G80 and GV70 EVs.

Making it all possible, though, is harder work than you might imagine. Hyundai is preparing a dedicated organization to support these EVs and, probably, to avoid an embarrassing error at one of the most highly publicized events on earth.

That means that FIFA will provide 100-150 kW EV chargers at the event’s parking facilities, and Hyundai will monitor its fleet of vehicles in real time. That, it says, will allow it to provide prompt response and emergency dispatches if accidents or incidents occur.

The automaker will also have Ioniq 5s on-hand, whose sole purpose is to act as a mobile jerrycan to charge any EVs that run out of power on the road using their Vehicle-to-Load technology.

To ensure seamless service, a dedicated team from Hyundai Motor Company’s Headquarters Service, Sub-Middle East Regional Service and Sub-Middle East Regional Quality Center will be on standby at a Quality Situation Room in the FIFA parking facilities to assist with the operation. They will have access to the Qatari dealership service infrastructure if repairs are needed.

From this month, Hyundai has also started a training program for drivers. This goes over how to correctly use the hybrid and fully electric vehicles that will be in use at the event.

“Hyundai Motor and FIFA share a strong commitment to make this year’s event a sustainable success through the use of clean mobility,” said Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company. “By providing our eco-friendly hybrid and battery electric vehicles as ground transportation, we expect to achieve our shared goal of making the World Cup in Qatar a win-win for planet Earth and humanity.”

Hyundai’s vehicles will be in service throughout the event, which runs from November 20 to December 18 in Qatar.
