Maserati Announces Driver Lineup For Their First-Ever Formula E Team

Next year, Maserati will return to the single-seater racing for the first time in over 60 years with their first-ever Formula E team. Now, almost a year after that initial announcement was made, the Italian team has announced their driver lineup for their inaugural season.

Piloting Maserati’s car next year will be the duo of Maximilian Günther and Edoardo Mortara. Both drivers are veterans to the series, with Mortara joining in 2017 and Günther entering one year later in 2018.

For Mortara, this new team should feel like home, as the operation that is now Maserati was rebranded from Venturi, the team he’s represented since his Formula E debut. As for Günther, he’s making the move from Nissan e.dams, a team he was only at for a single season. The two drivers also have a fair share of accolades to their names, with the Mortara placing second in the Season 7 championship, winning 6 races, and finishing on the podium 13 times, while Günther’s main claim to fame comes in the form of being the youngest race winner in Formula E’s history.

Maserati is set to enter Formula E for Season 9, the first season of the new Gen3 cars. Compared to the Gen2, which will be phased out after this season, these cars feature one extra motor, 134 more hp (136 PS / 100 kW), 132 lb (60 kg) less weight, and a 26 mph (40 km/h) higher top speed as a result of all that. Additionally, the strength of the new regenerative braking system means this car has no need for traditional rear brakes at all, which is an interesting stat. As for what Maserati’s Gen3 car will look like, it’s still up in the air, so that will have to be the next big thing to look out for.
