The Acura NSX Is Dead As The Last Type S Has Been Built

It’s the end of an era at Acura as the last NSX has been built at the Performance Manufacturing Center in Marysville, Ohio.

The final second-generation car was a Gotham Gray NSX Type S, which was introduced last fall and limited to 350 units. The high-performance model was notable for being the most powerful NSX ever as it featured a revised twin-turbo 3.5-liter V6 and an upgraded Sport Hybrid system.

This increased the output to 600 hp (447 kW / 608 PS) and 492 lb-ft (666 Nm) of torque, which gave it 27 hp (20 kW / 27 PS) and 16 lb-ft (22 Nm) more than the standard model. Thanks to the upgraded powertrain and standard all-wheel drive system, the Type S rockets from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in less than three seconds and has a top speed of 191 mph (307 km/h).

Acura was matter of fact about the car’s death, but the first-generation NSX was introduced in 1989 as a revolutionary mid-engine sports car. Production ended in 2005 and there were calls for a successor.

Unfortunately, this was easier said than done as the 2007 Advanced Sports Car concept was designed to preview an NSX successor, but that model was ultimately scrapped. An NSX concept then debuted at the 2012 North American International Auto Show and was followed by the production model three years later.

After a strong start due to pent-up demand, the NSX struggled as buyers were few and far between. However, Acura wasn’t deterred and they continued upgrading the car over the years. In particular, we drove the updated 2019 model and it was an absolute blast on the track.

Sadly, the second-generation NSX has now reached the end of the road and its future is hazy. However, officials have said they’re confident in a third-generation NSX and have suggested it will likely be electric, if it ever gets approved.

In the meantime, employees at the Performance Manufacturing Center will be tasked with building the 2023 Acura TLX Type S PMC Edition, which features a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 that produces 355 hp (265 kW / 360 PS) and 354 lb-ft (480 Nm) of torque. It enables the sedan to accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in around five seconds and hit an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
