Stellantis has issued a recall for approximately 280,000 Ram diesel trucks around the world due to a fire risk.
A notice issued by the National Highway Traffic Administration reveals that some 248,342 vehicles are impacted in the United States while a spokesman for the company’s Canadian operations confirmed an additional 17,420 are located in Canada.
Stellantis has revealed that select 2020-2022 Ram 3500 pickup trucks equipped with the Cummins 6.7-liter turbo-diesel engine and 68RFE transmission, and 2020-2023 Ram 2500 trucks with the same powertrain, may experience a build up of pressure and heat inside the transmission. This could result in transmission fluid being expelled from the dipstick tube which could come in contact with ignition sources within the engine compartment, potentially triggering a fire.

A total of 48,965 examples of the Ram 3500 produced between September 18, 2019 and November 4, 2022 in the United States have been recalled alongside 199,377 examples of Ram 2500 trucks manufactured from September 4, 2019 to November 4, 2022.
Stellantis says owners of affected vehicles may notice a Malfunction Indicator Lamp on the instrument cluster.
The automaker’s Technical Safety and Regulatory Compliance organization opened an investigation into Ram 2500 and 3500 trucks after becoming aware of a potential trend of engine compartment fires. Stellantis is aware of 16 field reports and 16 warranty claims potentially related to this issue for all markets and while it is not aware of any fatalities related to the issue, it does know about one minor injury.
Owners of impacted models in the United States will be notified on or around December 30. A fix is still being developed.
