The Toyota Innova just got a new generation, shedding the ladder-frame underpinnings of its predecessors for the modern TNGA unibody platform. The new Innova gets the Zenix moniker in Indonesia, has three rows of seats, and comes fitted with a more efficient hybrid powertrain.
Toyota designers did a great job in modernizing the lines of the new Innova Zenix, which now looks more like an SUV rather than a minivan. The rugged front end sports a larger grille, modern intakes with DRLs, and thinner headlights mounted higher than before.

The profile is enhanced with pronounced fenders, plastic cladding around the wheel arches, and a Highlander-style window line. The alloy wheels measure from 16-inches up to 18-inches depending on the trim. The rear end is also significantly upgraded thanks to the simpler taillights reminiscent of the Nissan X-Trail, and the SUV-style bumper while retaining the practicality of a large tailgate. Toyota is also offering a number of accessories like bumper extensions, blacked-out grille garnish, and different alloy wheels to further spice-up the styling.
The new Innova measures 4,755 mm (187.2 inches) long, 1,850 mm (72.8 inches) wide, and 1,795 mm (70.7 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,850 mm (112.2 inches). This makes it only 20 mm (0.8 inches) longer and wider than the outgoing model, although the wheelbase has grown by 100 mm (3.9 inches). The Innova Zenix is exactly as tall as its predecessor while maintaining the generous 185 mm (7.3 inches) ground clearance.
Inside, the Innova retains its signature three-row layout with space for seven or eight passengers. There is a healthy amount of legroom for the second row, which can be specified with two captain chairs featuring retractable leg rests. The biggest upgrade though has to do with technology.
There is a 9-inch or 10-inch touchscreen for the infotainment, a 4.2-inch screen in the instrument cluster, and two additional 10-inch screens mounted on the seatbacks for the rear passengers. Higher trims also get leather upholstery for the seats, faux wood or aluminum accents, a wireless charging pad, four USB-C outlets, ambient lighting, and a large sunroof. In terms of safety, the high-spec Innova Zenix is equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense ADAS suite, which is missing from the entry-level variants.
The previous generations of the Toyota Innova were based on a ladder-frame chassis shared with the Hilux pickup. The new model makes a leap into the future underpinned by the GA-C unibody architecture from the Corolla, which is why it is now offered with FWD rather than RWD.
The model is available with either petrol or hybrid powertrains. The entry-level non-electrified version is fitted with a 2.0- liter engine producing 172 hp (128 kW / 174 PS). The hybrid gets a 2.0-liter four-cylinder 16V Dual VVT-i engine with 150 hp (112 kW / 152 PS) and an electric motor with 111 hp (83 kW / 113 PS) for a combined power output of 183 hp (137 kW / 186 PS). In both cases, power is transmitted to the front axle through a CVT gearbox.
Pricing of the Toyota Innova Zenix in Indonesia starts from Rp 419,000,000 ($26,645) for entry-level trim and climbs up to Rp 601,150,000 ($38,228) for the range-topper. Soon, the automaker is expected to unveil an Indian version of the model which will likely adopt the Innova Hycross moniker.
