Samsung has filed a new trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a mobile app called “Self Repair Assist.” First spotted by SamMobile, the app’s icon in the application shows a cogwheel and a wrench with a blue background. Its description reads as follows:
Computer application software for mobile phones for self-installation and self-maintenance of smartwatches, tablets, mobile phones, and earbuds.
From the text above, it looks like Samsung may expand its self-repair program to include Galaxy watches and earbuds in the future. The current program Samsung offers is restricted to Galaxy Phones and tablets, including the Galaxy S20 series, Galaxy S21 lineup, and the Galaxy Tab S7 Plus.
Besides the possibility of Samsung including more devices in its DIY repair program, a standalone app from the company also hints at the end of its partnership with iFixit. The latter presently provides repair guides for Samsung devices and also sells genuine repair parts to Samsung’s customers. In other words, you may not have to rely on iFixit for self-repairing your Samsung merchandise.
Of course, all of this is conjecture at the moment. Companies file trademark applications all the time. Only some of them ever make it out as actual products. We’ll have to wait and see what Samsung intends to do with this app and if the company decides to add smartwatches and earbuds to its self-repair program.
