More usually associated with the design of vehicles at Ferrari, Maserati, McLaren, Mini, and Fiat than anything else, Frank Stephenson has taken a step outside his comfort zone to create a new, limited edition series of watches.

“It’s the age-old adage ‘car people are watch people’, so it was a natural step for me to get creative with timepieces too,” says Stephenson. “It was very enjoyable designing COSMOS and I’m proud to debut it to all enthusiasts.”

The car designer and recently turned-into YouTube personality has partnered with Time Concepts to create the Cosmos series of watches that are inspired by space. The overall shape of the watch is inspired by the smooth flow of stellar winds, while the watch face’s speckled granite dial is intended to evoke the starry sky.

All three hands appear to float around the watch, revolving around what Stephenson describes as a black hole—though the overall look reminds me of the dials in a third-generation (2007-2015) Mercedes C-Class.

The numbers that the hands point towards are printed in a stylized font using thick Superluminova lume ink that glows at night. A Japanese quart movement from Miyota helps ensure that the dials are always pointing to the right number.

With a case made of stainless steel and a band made of silicone rubber with a bespoke buckle, the materials used here are thoughtful but not exotic. That means that the watches, being sold via SzantoTime, are being sold at the reasonable price of $250.

The first in a trilogy of watch series that Stephenson plans to design, the timepieces will be inspired by the air, the sea, and the land.

“The collection showcases the love I have for exceptional and emotionally charged design, just like what is required in designing world-class cars,” says Stephenson. “We hope that car enthusiasts and those that appreciate unique and compelling design will gravitate to my new watch collection and enjoy wearing them through all of life’s exciting adventures.”
