The new 2023 BMW X1 has performed reasonably well in the moose test, even though its results weren’t overly impressive.

Introduced earlier this year, the new X1 is bigger than its predecessor and was tested in entry-level 18d guise by km77 while fitted with 245/45 R19 Hankook Ventus S1 Evo 3 MO tires at all four corners.

The publication first attempted to maneuver the SUV through the moose test at 81 km/h (50.3 mph). It immediately experienced some understeer and the driver was unable to keep it between the cones. An attempt was also made at 78 km/h (48.5 mph) but once again, the BMW understeered too much and the driver couldn’t avoid taking out two of the cones.

On its best attempt, the X1 passed the moose test at 74 km/h (46 mph). This matches the 74 km/h result of the Alfa Romeo Tonale that km77 tested earlier this month.

A slalom test was also conducted. The BMW X1 18d completed it in 25.5 seconds, slightly slower than the Tonale with its time of 24.9 seconds.

While we haven’t driven the new X1 in 18d guise, we did have the opportunity to sample it in xDrive28i form in November. This variant is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that pumps out 241 hp and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque, gains of 13 hp and 37 lb-ft (50 Nm) over the previous-generation model. Coupled to the engine is a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and where the xDrive28i has all-wheel drive, the 18d tested by km77 is front-wheel drive.
