If you’ve got a Hyundai vehicle that feels like it shudders or vibrates hard when turning there might be a simple explanation. According to a technical service bulletin (TSB) issued back in May of 2022, the condition might be totally normal. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s happening, what cars are affected, and why it’s probably not a big deal for owners.

Modern cars are especially great at reducing vibration in the cabin but many Hyundai owners have reported exactly that feeling. Of course, in many cases, it only seems to happen when the driver is making hard turns with full steering lock. It turns out that the shudder or vibration is completely normal and requires no repairs.

According to TSB 22-ST-007H, the condition is specific to N vehicles in the Hyundai lineup. That means the Kona N, the Elantra N, and the Veloster N specifically. It doesn’t apply to N-Line vehicles and here’s why.

Don’t Worry, There’s A Reason Why Your Hyundai N Wheel Shudders And Vibrates At Low Speeds

Most vehicles, not just Hyundais, use a steering geometry setup that allows the inner front tire to turn more than the outer tire. This results in a tighter turning radius during low-speed turns like u-turns or turns in a parking lot.

The N vehicles instead use a steering geometry setting intended to improve high-speed performance driving. The result is that when at low speed with the steering wheel cranked to one side or the other, the tire side scrub can cause vibration or a shudder. On top of that, Hyundai says that the use of summer tires can make the condition worse when it’s cold outside.

In the original Facebook post pointing out the TSB a number of owners specifically commented about how they had only recently started to experience this shudder as temperatures drop across the nation.

To be clear, Hyundai isn’t saying that dealer service departments should make shudder or vibrations a low priority. In fact, the TSB specifically indicates that service techs should thoroughly evaluate complaints surrounding either condition. While it’s possible that the stock steering geometry is to blame for the condition, other issues could cause it as well.
