Well, this is slightly embarrassing. We imagine Mercedes-AMG had already locked down plans to celebrate its F1 campaign with a special edition SL63 long before it realized it was going to finish third behind Red Bull and Ferrari in this year’s Championship.

But here it is, the 2023 Mercedes-AMG SL63 Motorsport Collectors Edition, a special version of the AMG sports car that’s almost as rare as AMG-Petronas wins in 2022. Only 100 of these F1-inspired SLs will be offered for sale, each with a package of cosmetic upgrades including a livery that borrows from the F1 car – though interestingly it’s the slightly more successful (but still not victorious) 2021 car’s color scheme that appears to have been used as a base.

The front three-quarters of the limited edition SL is coated in the same classy silver paint you’ll see on any number of regular production SL roadsters, but at the rear that silver fades into black which we can’t help thinking makes it look like the car has been sat in the cold rather too long.

The black section is dotted with three-pointed stars, while both portions of the car gain flashes of green from the Petronas racer that are also repeated on the outer trim of the 10-spoke, 21-inch wheels. AMG also bolsters the spec with the AMG Aerodynamics Package, and the AMG Night Package I and II which are available as options on the regular SL. They bring a more aggressive bumper and diffuser treatments, plus high-gloss black and black chrome coatings for features like the splitter, sills, mirror caps, radiator grille, and badges.

Buyers get to choose red or yellow stitching for their black Nappa leather sports seats, while a Burmester sound system, AMG Track Pace telematics package, and an AMG indoor car cover are included as standard.

Mercedes-AMG hasn’t revealed how much more you’ll have to pay to get your hands on one of these black-butt SLs, but it’ll inevitably cost more than the standard car. One thing that hasn’t changed is the 577 hp (585 PS) 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8.
