Suzuki has finally taken the wraps off the much-anticipated Jimny 5-Door at the Auto Expo 2023 in Delhi, India. The longer and more practical variant of the Jimny will be sold in Suzuki’s global markets including India, Africa, and Latin America.

Predictably, the Suzuki Jimny 5-Door is sharing most of its design with the 3-Door model. Apart from the extra doors and the longer wheelbase, the only styling update is the chrome-infused grille, as the boxy shape, the lighting units, the unpainted bumpers, and the fender extensions remain identical.

 Suzuki Jimny 5-Door Debuts Adding Extra Practicality Into The Mix

The Suzuki Jimny 5-Door measures 3,985 mm (156.9 inches) long, 1,645 mm (64.8 inches) wide, and 1,720 mm (67.7 inches) tall, with a wheelbase of 2,590 mm (102 inches). This means it is 340 mm (13.4 inches) longer than the global-spec Jimny 3-Door, with all of the extra length going into the stretched wheelbase. The rest of the dimensions are virtually identical. Depending on the specification, the SUV weighs between 1,195-1,210 kg (2,635-2,668 pounds), which is 75-125 kg (165-276 pounds) heavier compared to its 3-Door counterpart.

Inside, there is more space for the rear passengers that benefit from newly designed seats. The front seats can still recline to a vertical position, making the Jimny the perfect place for a quick nap. The cargo space is still rather small at 208 lt (7.3 cubic feet), growing to 332 lt (11.7 cubic feet) when the rear seats are folded according to the press release. This represents a significant increase over the 85 lt (3 cubic feet) boot of the 3-Door model in a four-seater configuration, although it comes short of the 863 lt (30.5 cubic feet) space at the back of the Jimny LCV two-seater.

The familiar dashboard comes with a 7-inch or a 9-inch touchscreen for the infotainment that is compatible with wireless Android Auto / Apple Carplay and sports a rear-view camera. There are two available trims – Alpha and Zeta – with the high-spec model adding LED headlights, fog lights, 15-inch alloy wheels (instead of steelies), cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control, 9-inch infotainment, and an Arkamys sound system with four speakers. Both trims come standard with six airbags.

Under the bonnet of the Indian-spec model lies a naturally aspirated 1.5-liter petrol engine producing 103 hp (77 kW / 105 PS) and 134 Nm (99 lb-ft) of torque. The engine is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic. In both cases, Suzuki’s AllGrip Pro AWD system with low-range transfer gear comes standard. The rumors about a mild-hybrid setup didn’t materialize, although an electrified engine could be offered in other markets in the future.

The ladder-frame SUV remains quite capable off the beaten track thanks to the short overhangs and the generous ground clearance of 210 mm (8.3 inches). Compared to the shorter 3-Door variant, the approach and departure angles are nearly identical at 36 degrees and 50 degrees (against 37 and 49 degrees), while the ramp break-over angle is slightly worse at 24 degrees (against 28 degrees) due to the stretched wheelbase.

The fourth generation of the Suzuki Jimny was originally introduced in 2018 and is expected to receive a facelift this year alongside the addition of the 5-Door bodystyle variant. Maruti Suzuki didn’t announce pricing for the stretched model which is expected to cost more than the regular Jimny. Production of the model has already started at the Gurugram plant, with sales in India scheduled to start in May 2023.
