TL;DR

  • Pixel owners are reporting that their devices never received January’s monthly update.
  • The problem seems to only be affecting Pixel owners on T-Mobile.
  • Some users claim their devices are still stuck on November’s update.

There’s a lot of confusion going on among Pixel owners right now. Specifically among Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 owners on T-Mobile who have yet to receive January’s monthly update.

Google released its monthly OS update for January on Tuesday, January 3, 2023. With it came the usual security patches and bug fixes, nothing particularly special. What is noteworthy, however, is the fact that it appears not everyone got the update.

According to Phone Arena, people are flocking to Reddit to post about not receiving January’s update. As Phone Arena reports, someone claiming to be a T-Mobile employee jumped onto the unofficial T-Mobile subreddit stating January’s update was pulled by T-Mobile because of issues. The post was later deleted.

The issues the user may be referring to could be related to earlier reports of Pixel owners losing Bluetooth connectivity. Some Pixel owners claimed that after installing January’s update, they were unable to connect their phones to their cars via Bluetooth.

Seemingly confirming this is a T-Mobile issue, Phone Arena points out that one Reddit user known as Jimx2 posted:

Wow. I can’t believe that actually worked. I put in one of my international sim and changed it to AT&T Roaming and the update started immediately. Thanks! I guess this further confirms it’s a T-Mobile issue.

However, the problem doesn’t just revolve around Pixel 6 and 7 owners. There are apparently users of the Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro that are claiming that they’re still stuck on November’s update.

Since Google Fi also relies on T-Mobile’s customer service, it appears Pixel owners on this service are also affected. As far as we know, Google has not announced that it has pulled the update.

Android Authority has reached out to Google and T-Mobile to ask about the situation. We’ll provide updates to this post with any new information that comes in.
