More than 24,000 Porsche Panamera models and 650 Bentley Continental models are being recalled in the United States because of a water pump issue.

Separate recall notices issued by Porsche and Bentley reveal that liquid can permeate through the pump housing into the electrical circuit board and connector. In the event of this happening, it could trigger a short circuit and may result in thermal damage to the external coolant pump. Damage done to the harness could also progress to the point where it triggers a vehicle fire.

Both car manufacturers note that owners of impacted vehicles may be alerted to the issue due to a problem with the climate control system. Additionally, reduced performance may be noted when using the Residual Heat function that allows the vehicle to be heated after the ignition has been switched off. Bentley models with the W12 engine may also see an Engine Management Light illuminate.

Both Bentley and Porsche will notify impacted owners from March 27, 2023. They will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealership. Porsche says it will replace the external coolant pump with one that has an optimized sealing concept and notes that the plug-in connection will also be inspected for damage and replaced if necessary. Bentley says it is still working on a solution.
