For years, car enthusiasts have speculated about the future of the Toyota Supra. Now, the latest buzz out out of Japan suggest that the iconic sports car may be going electric and could arrive in showrooms as early as 2026. Of course, as with any rumor, it’s important to take these reports with a grain of salt.

A report from BestCarWeb claims that production of the current Supra will continue until 2025, when it will be retired in style with a special GRMN variant. This version is said to be the last one with a combustion engine and could feature a twin-turbocharged BMW-sourced 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine, tuned to produce a staggering 542 horsepower lifting the sports car to all-new performance heights. This version will also apparently be the last one with a combustion engine.

Its rumored replacement, sixth-generation Supra is said to retain the current model’s rear-wheel drive layout and that it could be based on an updated version of the automaker’s e-TNGA architecture.

Next-Gen Toyota Supra Could Be All-Electric, Report Suggests

Very little else is known about the next Supra but when (and if) it hits the market, it could prove to be a close rival to the all-electric Alpine sports car that is in the works. It’s also safe to assume that it will pump out more horsepower and torque than the current Supra and it’s entirely possible that it will also be a touch more expensive.

The current Supra is an excellent sports car but its similarities to the BMW Z4 that it shares many of its parts with have always rubbed some people the wrong way. The Japanese car manufacturer recently generated new interest in the Supra with the long-overdue launch of a six-speed manual variant. While it adds to the overall driving experience of the car, it doesn’t transform a good sports car into an exceptional one.

If the sixth-gen Supra is indeed all-electric, it will no doubt cause a lot of controversy. Fortunately, we apparently have a 542 hp twin-turbo A90 Supra to look forward to before it arrives and that’s enough to excite anyone.
