Volkswagen is upping the game in sustainability, at least in terms of the materials used in the cabins of its fully electric ID range. More specifically, starting this year, the interior upholstery of the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, and ID.7 will be made of recycled materials, inspired by the innovations of the ID. Buzz.

Following the example of the ID. Buzz, all EVs offered by Volkswagen will become more eco-friendly by using Sequal yarn for their seat upholstery. This material, which is also used by Fiat, is made from 10% collected marine debris and 90% recycled PES yarn. Thus, it reduces emissions by almost one-third (32%) compared to conventional fabrics.

Mind you, this is only one of the ID. Buzz features that will eventually find their way into the rest of the ID. family in the long term. Indeed, the cool-looking van is a little bit ahead of the game compared to its counterparts.

As highlighted in the video above, it features recycled polyester in the headliner and floor covering, and plenty of recycled plastic used in insulation, underbody cladding, and wheel housing liners. As a result, each ID. Buzz uses the equivalent of 63 recycled half-liter bottles. Furthermore, the chrome trim on the doors, instrument panel, and the steering wheel has been replaced by a similar-looking liquid paint with a bio-based binder.

VW assures everyone that the recycled materials used in the interior of its models offer the exact same look and feel as brand-new ones, and do not compromise durability and longevity. Sustainability is also something that customers want, according to their feedback. Volkswagen wants to reduce carbon emissions by 40% per vehicle by 2030, as it moves to the long-term goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.
