Pixel 7a specs appear ahead of possible Google I/O launch

TL;DR

  • Hands-on images and specs of the Pixel 7a have leaked.
  • The most significant upgrades are headed to the camera system and the processing hardware.

The Pixel 7a may be headed for a launch at Google I/O 2023, the dates for which have been announced. As is the case with most of the hardware Google launches, the Pixel 7a has leaked extensively. Adding to the stream of information, a Twitter tipster has posted some previously leaked hands-on images of the phone alongside what seem to be its confirmed specs.

The latest leak comes from Debayan Roy, a not-so-popular leaker with a semi-decent track record. The images come from an older leaked hands-on video of the phone that shows the alleged Pixel 7a from the front and the back matching previously leaked renders of the phone.

Other than that, the tipster lists out the specs for the phone. There aren’t many surprises here either. Confirming previous leaks and discoveries made by code hunters, the tipster reports that the Pixel 7a would feature a 6.1-inch 90Hz display, the Tensor G2 chip which also powers the Pixel 7 series, a 64MP Sony IMX787 primary camera alongside a 12MP ultrawide shooter, slow-poke 5W wireless charging, and of course the Android 13 operating system.

• Tensor G2 , LPDDR5 RAM, UFS 3.1
• 64MP Sony IMX787 + 12MP UW
• 5W wireless charging

The most significant upgrades here come to the camera system and the processing hardware. The Pixel 6a featured a 12.2MP primary shooter, so the upgrade to the new sensor could bring some welcome improvements to the Pixel 7a’s imaging capabilities. Meanwhile, the Tensor G2 will bring impressive machine-learning chops to the upcoming Google mid-ranger. However, it does tend to run hot in stressful situations. The addition of wireless charging is also a neat touch, but 5W seems a bit primitive for a 2023 smartphone.
