Volkswagen confirmed the recent reports about its new EV concept which is set to be unveiled later today. The VW ID. 2all will preview a future production model in the compact segment, slotting below the ID.3, with a starting price under the €25,000 ($26,381) mark.

During the announcement of its 2022 earnings, Volkswagen said that the production version of the ID. 2all will be one of the 10 upcoming EVs that will be launched by 2026. The new model is described as “a hands-on preview of the first electric VW for everyone” highlighting its focus on affordability. It is expected to bridge the gap between the upcoming ID.1 entry-level hatchback and the recently facelifted ID.3 compact hatchback.

The automaker didn’t give us a specific date for the market launch of the new model, but earlier comments by VW Group officials suggest it shouldn’t be expected before 2025. Thankfully, we don’t have to wait that long in order to see a preview of the exterior design which will closely mirror the ID. 2all concept. The new design direction was dictated by ex-Bentley designer Andreas Mindt, who recently replaced Jozef Kaban as the new chief designer at Volkswagen.

The production version of the VW ID. 2all will be a compact EV, meaning that its footprint will be slightly smaller than the 4,261 mm (167.8 inches) long ID.3. It will most likely ride on the upgraded MEB+ architecture which will also underpin the smaller supermini-sized ID.1 hatchback. Both models will be produced at the Martorell factory near Barcelona, Spain, alongside similar offerings from Cupra and Skoda.

What is not clear yet is whether VW will use the obvious ID.2 nameplate which would be in line with the current lineup, or go for the more nostalgic ID. Golf moniker that is rumored. Hopefully, the automaker will give us more details at the official debut of the concept tonight.
