A large-scale recall has just been issued for the 2021 Ford F-150 that involves no less than 222,454 examples of America’s best-selling pickup.

A recall notice issued through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that impacted F-150 models have been fitted with wiper arm head spline teeth that were produced out of design specification. Ford notes this means a windshield wiper arm may become inoperable and could potentially detach from the vehicle.

The car manufacturer says the issue was triggered by worn wiper arm spline tooling core inserts used at the supplier This resulted in insufficient spline tooth height that can cause the arm attachment to strip. Owners of F-150 models with the issue may notice erratic or slow wiper speed of the driver or passenger wiper arm.

Impacted Ford F-150 models were manufactured between January 8, 2020, and August 16, 2021.

Ford notified dealers of the recall on March 13 and will inform owners of impacted trucks between March 27 and March 31. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a Ford or Lincoln dealership to have both the front windshield wiper arms inspected for the wiper arm build date and replaced as required. The fix will be performed free of charge and owners will be eligible for reimbursement if they paid to remedy the issue previously.

This isn’t the first recall impacting certain Ford F-150 trucks. In August last year, the company announced that more than 58,000 F-150 models were recalled due to an issue with their aluminum driveshaft.
