It turns out that the Volkswagen ID.2all concept that foretells a production model that will follow in 2025, very likely called the ID.2, will serve as a base for a fully electric hot hatch, with a high-ranked VW official confirming the earlier rumors. More specifically, Kai Grünitz, VW Board Member for Technical Development, said that they are already working on a “sporty version” of the ID.2all, making us hopeful that such an offering could eventually reach production.

Grünitz spoke to our colleagues at Top Gear during the launch of the concept. While he didn’t want to give away many details about the hotter version, he revealed it will retain a front-wheel-drive layout rather than getting a dual-motor all-wheel drive system. The board member said that he has “a number in mind for the power figure”, promising that he will reveal it sometime in the future.

 The VW ID.2 Electric Hatch Will Get A Hotter GTI Or GTX Variant Too
The hotter variant of the pictured VW ID.2all will most likely feature a sportier bodykit, communicating its performance credentials.

The VW ID.2all concept is fitted with a single electric motor producing 223 hp (166 kW / 226 PS), which is more than what you get from a similarly-sized ICE-powered Polo GTI. The EV needs less than 7 seconds for the 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint, which means that the hotter version will probably outrun the Golf GTI. Interestingly, the sportier-looking Cupra UrbanRebel shares the same front-mounted electric motor and MEB+ architecture with the standard ID.2all.

Volkswagen is currently using the GTX moniker for the more powerful trims of its ID. range, with the GTI only used for ICE-powered models. However, this could change in the future, as all of them are rumored to get under the GTI umbrella. Grünitz didn’t give a positive answer to that question, saying: “Whether it will be a GTI or GTX or whatever we will see”. VW also has the R sub-brand for its performance flagships, which will also go EV-only by 2030, but it will most likely be reserved for ultra-powerful all-wheel-drive offerings.

While the company hasn’t said when they are going to show the conceptual electric hot hatch, there were rumors suggesting it could debut as early as this May at Volkswagen’s dedicated GTI event. One thing is for sure – hot hatches will live on in the fully electric era.
