Ford has made many versions of the iconic Mustang over the years, but one thing they’ve never made is a hardtop convertible variant of it. Notable tuner Galpin Auto Sports felt they needed to change that back in 2010, and the fruit of their labor just sold to a very lucky buyer.
Listed for sale on Bring A Trailer, the 2011 Mustang GT was made by Galpin for SEMA and has just 860 miles (1,384 km) on the odometer. But more impressive than the low mileage is the fact that it has a fully functional, power-operated retractable hardtop.
The execution of said top is actually quite nice as well, both from the outside and the inside, and it honestly looks like it could’ve rolled off the factory floor that way. And while it may be impressive to make the fabrication aesthetically pleasing, it takes just as much work, if not more, to make it function as good as it looks.
It’s unclear if Galpin ever made any more of these hardtop convertible Mustangs beyond this one show car, but regardless, even if it’s not the only one to exist, it’s undeniably a rare machine. In addition to the new convertible top, the car receives tinted lights, as well as body-color lower trim on the front lip, side skirts, and diffuser, which again looks clean enough to be a factory option. The Mustang also sports Ford Racing suspension, a set of Halibrand-style wheels, and Nitto NT555 Extreme ZR tires to aid in handling.
Providing motivation to Galpin’s creation is a nearly stock 5.0L Coyote V8, which makes 412 hp (418 PS / 307 kW) and 390 lb-ft (529 Nm). We say nearly stock because it does have one sole modification: a Flowmaster exhaust that lets the engine breathe a bit better and amplifies its eight-cylinder growls. However, the winning bidder said that the first thing he plans on doing with it is taking it to the shop to install a Whipple supercharger and various other “bits and pieces.”
