When he isn’t chief executive officering up in Michigan, Ford’s Jim Farley is known to be a fan of driving racecars. As such, Ford’s CEO recently asked his Twitter following if his company should make a road-going version of the 2024 Mustang GT3.

The tweet was a response to his own post, showing a video of the new racecar testing in Florida, at the legendary Sebring International Raceway earlier this week. The video showed a test car driving down the track’s pit straight, and taking the first and final corners.

In his tweet, which has now been seen 293,800 times, Farley simply asked, “Should we make a road version?” While it’s unclear how serious the CEO was being, it immediately garnered highly positive responses from racecar drivers like Marino Franchitti, as well as Singer Vehicle Design’s official account.

The video Farley posted offers us one of our first unfettered views of the new Mustang racecar, while it’s also the first time we get to hear it too. The 2024 Mustang GT3 is set to make its competitive debut at the Daytona 24, in January 2024.

The new racecar will be based on the new S650 Mustang and will be powered by an upgraded version of the Coyote V8 bored to 5.4 liters. The 2024 Mustang GT3 is being developed by Ford Performance, in collaboration with Multimatic. The Canadian engineering firm has already been involved in the development and production of the Ford GT.

Since we haven’t yet been provided with details about the Mustang GT3, it’s hard to know just how difficult it would be to make it road-legal, but the S550 is a tough act to follow. The outgoing Mustang had several popular special editions, including the Shelby GT500, which remains the most powerful road-legal example of the breed to have ever been produced.
