The Macan EV is slowly edging towards production and Porsche is giving us a look at the Leipzig factory where it will be built.

To get ready for the production of its first all-electric SUV, Porsche has been upgrading and improving the Leipzig site over recent years. Indeed, the entire production facility is already powered entirely with electricity from renewable sources, and in the future, the carmaker will be able to build combustion models, hybrid vehicles, and the Macan EV on the same assembly line.

Production of the electric Macan will finally commence at the end of 2023 and while many key details about it remain under wraps, we know it is underpinned by the new Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture that was co-developed by Audi and Porsche. The new platform employs an 800-volt electrical system and Porsche says the new Macan will pump out as much as 603 hp (450 kW) and 738 lb-ft (1,000 Nm) of torque, a significant hike over the outgoing combustion Macan, which tops out at 434 hp in Turbo specification.

“We’ve been working with electric mobility here since 2010,” Leipzig plant structure planner Sebastian Ganswindt described. “But the E-Macan will push us even farther! Our objective for the new E-Macan was to optimize costs and processes and integrate the new vehicle into the range. So we mechanized operations, added another 40 meters to the assembly hall, and restructured the testing ground, the “marriage” process, and battery delivery.”

The battery of the Macan EV will have a generous capacity of 100 kWh and support charging rates of more than 270 kW. While we don’t yet know the range of the SUV, the size of the battery pack indicates that it will be quite high. It has also been confirmed that the EV will rock new two-valve campers that work in conjunction with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) system.
