Maybach is ready to unveil its first-ever fully electric production model, which will be no other than its take on the EQS SUV. The company announced that the debut of the luxury EV will take place on April 17 both online and at the 2023 Shanghai Auto Show in China.

The press release was accompanied by a teaser photo showing the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV hiding under a golden cover. Thankfully our spy photographers have given us a better idea of its design. The electric Maybach is expected to closely mirror the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, with a few styling touches showing its opulent nature.

Exterior changes compared to the standard Mercedes will likely include Maybach’s hood ornament, a new grille, slightly redesigned bumpers, different alloy wheels, and a heavier dose of shiny bits all around the bodywork. Inside, the SUV is expected to feature a four-seater layout, with an infotainment system for the rear passengers, alongside luxurious amenities like folding tables and a refrigerator. It is also safe to assume that Maybach will use top-notch materials for the upholstery and offer plenty of personalization options to justify the higher price tag.

The Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV nameplate suggests that the EV will be more powerful than the EQS 580 4Matic SUV currently offered by Mercedes. The latter packs 536 hp (400 kW / 543 PS) and 633 lb-ft (857 Nm) of torque from dual electric motors, alongside a 108.4 kWh battery pack which is good for a 285 miles (459 km) range. At the moment, the only known spec of the Maybach-branded version is the provisional combined power consumption of 24.4-22.5 kWh/100 km which accompanies the official announcement.

Those who won’t visit the Shanghai Auto Show this year, will be able to watch the digital world premiere of the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 SUV through the automaker’s online platforms. Judging from previous Mercedes debuts, we wouldn’t be surprised if the company continued the teaser campaign in the course of the next two weeks prior to the official debut of the model.
