An issue with the heated mirrors of certain Honda Pilot, Honda Passport, Honda Ridgeline, and Honda Odyssey models has forced the car manufacturer to issue a recall in the United States.
When heated wing mirrors work, they are extremely handy in cold weather but when they don’t, that can lead to all kinds of problems. In this case, a recall notice issued with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reveals that the heater pad located behind the mirror glass itself can lose adhesion and detach from the mirror backing plate.
If this happens, the mirror glass will also detach with the heater pad, rendering the mirror useless and impacting rearward visibility. Honda says the problem has been triggered by the fact that the adhesive tape used to secure the heater pad to the backing plate simply isn’t strong enough.
A total of 330,318 vehicles are involved in the recall. As mentioned, these consist of the Honda Pilot, Passport, Ridgeline, and Odyssey, all of which were manufactured between January 3, 2020 and July 23, 2021.
The car manufacturer first received a market quality report about a potential issue in December 2018 when excessive mirror vibrations were observed. Honda continued to analyze the potential issue and in July 2021, the side view mirror supplier changed the adhesive tape to address these vibration concerns. In October last year, the NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation asked Honda to investigate reports of mirrors falling off. The brand has received 71 warranty claims related to the issue between May 2020 and October 2022.

Honda informed dealers of the recall on March 17 and will let owners know on or around May 8. Owners will be asked to take their vehicle to an authorized Honda dealer where the left and right mirror sets will be replaced.
