Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers detained a 10-year-old boy after he allegedly stole a car and began a journey to see his mother. Before they could do that, they had to stop him and GM’s partner OnStar came in clutch. Not only did it help authorities find the car but it also brought the chase to a stop without injuries to anyone.
The alleged theft had occurred on Hess Avenue in Buena Vista Township according to authorities. Police received both calls from bystanders and OnStar itself with information regarding the location of the stolen 2017 Buick Encore. The latter said that it was on the southbound side of I-75 traveling at a high speed.
Officers caught up to the boy in the Buick and attempted to initiate a stop for about a mile before OnStar remotely disabled the vehicle. The vehicle bumped into a guard rail just before it came to a stop. Evidently, the boy understood something about what was happening because he led police on a short foot chase thereafter.

A video of the incident shows that the boy was actually handling the Buick with a degree of skill. Despite weaving from lane to lane, the kid manages to almost entirely avoid a crash of any kind. Say what you will about this situation but if Buick wants to lower the average age of its drivers these kinds of data points will drop it fast.
Local reports suggest that the Buick Encore itself was actually the property of the mother in question. Evidently, he’d been staying with relatives leading up to the incident. While details are scarce, this is a minor after all, MSP Third District did confirm that it kept the boy at the Saginaw County Juvenile Detention Center for a time.

This somehow isn’t automatically the weirdest thing Michigan police have handled this year. In the running for that honor is the story of an actual cowboy lassoing a runaway steer while police block lanes on the highway. We can’t wait to hear what wild wacky thing happens next month in Michigan.
