BMW is preparing to give the G90 M5 a Neue Klasse-inspired makeover.
A prototype has been spied with a new front bumper, grille, and headlights.
The cabin is expected to adopt a new pillar-to-pillar display and other updates.
The BMW M5 was introduced less than a year ago, so it’s surprising to see a facelifted prototype this early. However, there’s a good reason for this as the automaker is embracing a new design language and models without the updated look will suddenly feel pretty dated.
The changes are immediately apparent as the M5 adopts a Neue Klasse-inspired front fascia with a shorter grille that flows into new headlights. They’re joined by a new front bumper, which gains a middle intake as well as a revamped lower opening. The latter sports a central V-shape, which will presumably echo the one found on the M2.
The rest of the design largely carries over, but we can expect an updated rear bumper and new taillights. The diffuser also appears a tad less aggressive, although it’s hard to be certain with all that camouflage.
Spy photographers only got a few glimpses inside, but the model is expected to adopt Panoramic iDrive and Operating System X. Both were previewed at CES earlier this year and they’ll see future models equipped with a pillar-to-pillar display that resides beneath the windshield.

The screen acts as a heads-up display and is broken up into three separate sections. One is a digital instrument cluster, while the others can be customized with widgets. We can also expect a central infotainment system as well as a new multifunction steering wheel that effectively replaces the iDrive controller.
Since this update is focused on style and technology, powertrain changes will presumably be slim to none. While that remains to be seen, the current model has a plug-in-hybrid powertrain that combines a twin-turbo 4.4-liter V8 engine with a 14.8 kWh battery as well as an eight-speed automatic transmission with an integrated electric motor.
This setup enables the model to produce a combined output of 717 hp (535 kW / 727 PS) and 738 lb-ft (999 Nm) of torque. Those generous numbers allow the all-wheel drive sedan to rocket from 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) in 3.4 seconds, before hitting a top speed of up to 190 mph (306 km/h).
